The white sands of Es Cavallet are so beautiful they have become a haunt for millions of tourists, including those who want to get intimate on holiday. But now campaigners say the steamy sessions are to blame for the erosion of the famous, but delicate, dunes which are part of Ses Salines Natural Park. Island newspaper Diario de Mallorca says the protected areas of the beach are closed off with fencing but cruisers are jumping over them on a daily basis. Es Cavallet apparently comes out top in a poll for preferred sexual locations, especially as the dunes offer protection from prying eyes. They say an information campaign was tried several years ago but visitors ignored the advice and even became aggressive. Patrols are being ruled out because unless they can be done on a daily basis, cruisers would go away one day but return the next. The paper also notes that Ibiza is not alone in this problem as there are many other beaches in Spain, including in Mallorca and Menorca, which are haunts for people looking to engage in sex and are also being damaged.
Sun, surf, sand, sea — and public sex with strangers. These semi-vegetated and mobile dunes are one of the most popular sightseeing spots on Gran Canaria island, and are legally protected as a nature reserve. Unfortunately, they are being loved to death. We studied almost sex spots across the vegetated section of these dunes, and found damage to 10 plant species, including three endemic to dune areas. When plants suffer, so do the animals and reptiles, with rare lizards and endemic plant species notably impacted. Those interested in casual sex are likely to venture into the coastal dunes, seeking privacy and partners. The impact of these visitors is, unfortunately, large and growing. We found around 5, square metres of the dunes has been totally altered by people seeking sex. These impacts have made it impossible for the area to be used as an environmental education centre for students. While there are sand-only dunes known as the little Sahara nearby, we found these are far less popular for sex spots compared to the vegetated dunes, which are home to more wildlife.
